Después del altar / After the Altar

El pasado 2 de noviembre, Día de Muertos, desde afuera de la Embajada de México en Londres, tomando café de olla para ahuyentar el frío del viento (que también nos hizo batallar para mantener encendidas las velas que combatían la oscuridad que cae temprano en estas tierras y estas fechas), compartimos con la comunidad de Las Abejas, y con personas reunidas en otras partes con el mismo fin, una forma ritual de honrar a las víctimas de la masacre de Acteal.

Ahí estuvimos, manteniendo el fuego por sus almas, por todos los que aún vivos les recuerdan, y también, pese a todo, por la esperanza. Pero fue también el fuego de una lucha: la lucha por la justicia.

Leímos la conmovedora carta de gratitud que nos enviaron Las Abejas. También leímos fragmentos de Nostalgia de la muerte, del poeta Xavier Villaurrutia. Compartimos café y pan de muerto recién horneado. Las víctimas de Acteal estuvieron representadas por su indumentaria: 45 prendas de ropa, entre vestidos, pantalones y blusas de niños, uno por cada una de las personas masacradas. La ropa volaba en el viento como recordándonos que todos ellos siguen con nosotros. Hubo flores en el altar, por supuesto papel picado, comida, velas y calaveritas, incluyendo un trofeo que nos trajimos del altar que pusieron en el Museo Británico el día anterior (una hermosa calavera de azúcar a la que le pusimos de nombre Julieta).

Recolectamos más firmas para la exigencia de justicia y de reapertura de la investigación del caso.

Sabemos que acaban de liberar a otros 9 de los paramilitares involucrados en la matanza y que hay al menos otros 20 que quizá sean liberados pronto también. Sabemos que los autores intelectuales siguen libres y sin ser investigados. Sabemos que Acteal fue un crimen de Estado que sigue rodeado por la más absoluta impunidad.

Ayer, 5 de noviembre, el grupo Movimientos organizó otro altar de Día de Muertos en el bar Chamucos en Bethnal Green, al este de Londres, y nos invitó a volver a pasar la película A Massacre Foretold, de Nick Higgins. Aprovechamos para juntar más firmas para nuestra exigencia.

Seguimos con las víctimas de Acteal, con los sobrevivientes, con la comunidad de Las Abejas, y seguiremos uniendo nuestra voz a la suya en su exigencia de justicia, sin importar que esté el Atlántico de por medio. La distancia se desvanece cuando muchas voces se unen por la justicia y la verdad.

Last November the 2nd, on the Mexican Day of the Dead, from outside the Mexican Embassy in London, drinking the traditional ‘café de olla’ to fight the cold (the wind was making us struggle as well to keep the candles shining against the darkness that falls early on these lands at this time of year), we shared with the Las Abejas community from Acteal, and with people gathered in other places to the same end, a ritual way of honouring the victims of the Acteal massacre.

We were there keeping alive the fire for their souls, for all those who are still alive and remember them, and also, in spite of all, we were keeping it alive for hope. But it was also the fire burning for a fight: the fight for justice.

We read the moving thank you letter that Las Abejas sent us. We also read fragments of Nostalgy of Death, by Mexican poet Xavier Villaurrutia. We shared coffee and the traditional ‘pan de muerto’ freshly baked. The Acteal victims were represented through their garments: 45 dresses, trousers and children shirts, one for each of the massacred persons.

The wind made the clothes look as if flying, as if reminding us that the victims are still with us. There were flowers in the altar, and of course ‘papel picado’ (specially cut coloured tissue paper), food, candles and skulls, including a trophy we got from the British Museum altar the day before (a beautiful huge sugar skull, whom we called Julieta).

We collected more signatures for the demand of justice and reopening of the investigation of the case.

We know 9 other paramilitaries involved in the killing have just been liberated and that there are at least other twenty who may be released soon as well. We know that the masterminds are still at large. We know that Acteal was a State crime still surrounded by absolute impunity.

Yesterday, 5th of November, the Movimientos group organized another altar for the Day of the Dead at the Chamucos bar in Bethnal Green and invited us to screen again A Massacre Foretold, the film by Nick Higgins. We took avail of the opportunity to gather more signatures for our demand.

We are still standing by the Acteal victims, the survivors, the Las Abejas community, and we will go on joining our voice to theirs in their demand of justice, no matter if the whole Atlantic is in between. Distance vanishes when many voices are joined in a call for justice and truth.

Criminales de Estado a juicio

Protesta universal del Día de Muertos.

Exijamos juntos la reapertura de la investigación del caso de la masacre de Acteal como un crimen de Estado, y honremos a las víctimas este Día de Muertos.

Únete a los individuos y agrupaciones interesados en tu localidad para organizar una vigilia la noche del primero de noviembre de 2009, seguida de una marcha, plantón o cualquier otra actividad pacífica el día 2.

No importa el país en que vivas: a las acciones que se lleven a cabo en México se unirán las organizadas en las Embajadas de México en otros países, de manera que cumplamos una jornada global de exigencia de justicia.

Recuerda que éste debe ser un acto pacífico y digno, honrando el espíritu con que la comunidad de Las Abejas ha luchado por la justicia todos estos años.

State Criminals in the Dock

Universal Protest on the Day of the Dead

Let us call together for the reopening of the investigation of the Acteal’s massacre case as a State crime, and let us honour the victims on the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Join those individuals and groups who care in the place you live in, in order to organize a vigil for the night of November the 1st, 2009, followed by a demonstration, sit-in or any other peaceful act the following day (the Mexican Day of the Dead).

It doesn’t matter in which country you live: those actions taking place in Mexico will be joined by those organized in the Mexican Embassies in other countries, so that we complete a full day’s global call for justice.

Remember that this must be a peaceful and dignified act, honouring the spirit with which the community of Las Abejas has fought for justice throughout all these years.
